April 21, 2007 Colorado Allied Drift Club
4-21-07 Colorado Allied Drift Club, Competition Round 2: Greeley, Colorado
Big thanks to the Colorado Allied Drift Club: Troy Merrit and Teresa Schmidt for helping to bring organized drifting to Colorado. Also thanks to Colin Frost and Cyrus for driving all the way out from California to assist with competition judging.
Colorado has definitely been hit by the drifting bug as 40+ drivers came out to Greeley, CO. to participate in one of the few legal drifting events away from the coasts. Starting early in the morning, dedicated drifters from all over Colorado arrived at Island Grove Regional Park to get their vehicles tech inspected and registered for a full day of drifting.
Once registered, drivers were separated into different run groups. Each run group was called to line up at different times and each driver was given 3 laps around the course per turn. The large parking lot at Island Grove provided a good area to work with and a challenging course was soon established. The course consisted of a straightaway leading into a long, right-handed sweeper, reducing down into a few switch-back corners. The straightaway was just long enough for some of the faster vehicles to get into third gear, but the lack of momentum did seem to cause some problems for lower horsepower vehicles while they struggled to get through that initial sweeper.
Colorado had a pretty diverse array of drift vehicles signed up for competition; S13s, S14s, FCs, AE86s, an M3 BMW, a Miata, and a few others rounded out the group. The majority of drivers at the event were beginners, but the fact that they got out on the course and gave it a good shot shows promise for the Colorado region. It won't be long before those beginner drivers get more experience under their belts and are able to put on a good show.
All in all, this was a great event. A good amount of action and a reasonable amount of driving time at a fair price. Good spectator turnout too! I can't wait for the day when Greeley, CO. becomes yet another hot spot in the world of drifting. Good job Colorado!
