Organizers had struggled to open the Short Course at the scheduled 10:00 am time due to required repairs to the guardrail following the chicane, but once the dangerous looking sections were bolted back together the track was able to turn green by 10:30. Except for a few voyagers to the drop-off at the exit of Turn 1 there were very few cars that needed towing and this was quite a relief to organizers who were a little short staffed on this day. Issues occurring on both tracks simultaneously further complicated the manpower issue and a few times Drift Session workers were grateful that it was the participants who helped clear the track and get things going again. The brotherhood that has grown out of this culture is truly something to be truly proud of and I am constantly feeling rewarded by the increasingly positive actions of most everyone that shows up on a regular basis.

Everyone took quick notice of Royce Fujimoto and Earl Huang’s return to Drift Session and neither of them took long to display why they are such strong Group “A” contenders. Adversely, we couldn’t help but notice the absence of Chris Taylor as well as some notable local drifters who may not yet have graduated to Group “A”. Being racers ourselves we understand the difficulty involved with preparing for competition on a monthly basis (this is done nowhere in the US other than at our events) and with the financial and resource burden that it creates for competitors, we are impressed by the volume of participation that is now preparing for it’s sixth season. Drift Session responded favorably to the momentum being generated by the drivers by increasing the purse for 1st thru 3rd place and, with the help of a contingency award of $50 from Kel Komatsubara, we eventually paid the winner $200. In addition for the first time we paid 2nd place and he received $75 and there was $50 paid out to 3rd. We are hopeful of adding to this gradually as we approach the full field of 16 at some point in the near future.
