A Competition Scores & Season Points
It took a little while for the cars to line up in Turn 2 for the season ending competition and some of the suspense that had been lost for a moment returned once things got rolling. There were no disqualifications for the ten Group “A” drivers, a first for Drift Session competitions, which meant that there were no spin outs or off course excursions. Barry’s results faired the worst of all due to his unfamiliarity with Steve’s car, but he did put in a valiant effort. Denny Cabal tied with (Steve’s brother) Shane Oliberos for 8th and Forrest Wang’s car lost power half way through the run and only managed 7th. Shigeomi still managed 6th place even though he struggled through the slow sections due to the lost 2nd gear. 5th was achieved by a solid effort put forth by recent Group “A” addition, Jason Watanabe. An impressive run by Mitchel Precht scored him 80 points (just one more than Jason) but leaving him three points back from 3rd place finisher, Jenson Kona. Jenson’s Chicane/Off Camber combination was his only undoing as his timing never came together, but he performed the most outstanding drift through the Sweeper that I think I have ever seen in competition (I seem to remember that Shige did do an awesome one that was also unforgettable).

Steve Oliberos took 2nd place with a solid run and 85 points and thus clinched the 2005 Championship, for which we all congratulate him. This slightly overshadowed the victory for Keoni
Rodrigues, which had made the crowd erupt in cheer upon announcement. Keoni had the total package for the entire day and refined his line through the technical portion of the track eventually scoring the most points there. Keoni threw both victorious arms in the air when he heard his name announced and the win confirms his potential as one of the up and coming drifting stars of the future.

We never could have expected the multitude of variables that added up to the season finale and can hardly wait for the first event in 2006. With eighteen eligible Group “A” drivers and talk of tandem run-offs and new additions to the top tier of drivers combined with a schedule of at least 10 events and upgraded equipment for many competitors we anticipate even more exciting results next year. The new Drift Session website is about to be launched and the media exposure is becoming more cutting edge and refined in order to present you, the drivers, with the most potential we can possibly provide. My “hat is off” to all of you that have helped thrust our sport into the spotlight of competitive motor sports in Hawaii and I look forward to all of your participation in the years to come.
Aloha until next time,
Chris Messer
