Once again the Drift Session returns, this time with a special event. As a thank you to our loyal drivers and spectators that have been attending Drift Session events for years, we brought in a special guest for this month's Drift Session... none other than the legendary Katsuhiro Ueo. Dozens of drivers flocked to the track for a chance to meet and greet one of the greatest drifters around. Special thanks goes to Abunai Racewear for sponsoring this event and assisting the Drift Session. Also big thanks to Justin Carvalho for arranging this meeting and providing guide and translation for Ueo during his stay.

Ueo and Justin both arrived on Friday morning May 13th and we quickly took Ueo to check in at the Ohana Maile Skycourt hotel in Waikiki, followed by lunch at the Mai Tai Bar.

Contrary to his quiet and reserved demeanor we've only seen on Option Video's, Ueo seems to be a very outspoken person who is very friendly and has a good sense of humor.

As is tradition with the Drift Session, out of town drivers get treated to a night on the town. Several of the Drift Session staff members along with a few drivers met up with Ueo at Dave & Busters for even more drinking and talk of drifting. Shortly after that, the topic of strip clubs was brought up and we were quickly on our way to see our friends at club Femme Nu.

Once in the door at Femme Nu, a barrage of girls welcomed us to the club like long lost friends. We pulled up to a stage side table where we sat Ueo down front and center with several of our friends who were dancing that night. Once again, we reminded Ueo that everything was on the house so not to worry about anything. The scene was reminiscent of the sensory overload a child would experience on his first trip into a candy store! Hundreds of dollar bills later, Ueo staggered back from the stage, eyes glazed over, with a smile on his face. Not wanting to be too exhausted for the following day at the track, we finished off our drinks and called it an early night at 1am and headed home to rest.

The following morning, Ueo was up bright and early to get to the Drift Session. As soon as he arrived, he was jumping into Mitch Precht's Nissan 240sx for a few test laps and a vehicle diagnosis. The rest of the day followed pretty much the same format, as Ueo would drive various vehicles volunteered by Drift Session drivers.

As the day went by, Ueo found himself getting more comfortable behind the wheel of left-hand drive vehicles and we were treated to an impressive display of his drifting ability. Ueo maxed out the speedometer of more than one vehicle that day as he displayed his expertise of high speed drifting at Long Course Turn 1. Ueo estimated his speed to be in the 130 - 140 mph range at the time of his turn-in.

At the end of the day, Ueo issued a friendly challenge to 3 of our top drifters: Barry Wong, Shige Hirabayashi, and Kolu Lau; each in their 350+ HP Nissan 240sx's. Ueo explained that those 3 vehicles would lead and he would chase and attempt to pass them in 5 laps or less. Ueo passed the final vehicle in just under 4 laps time.

Ueo also served as the guest judge for the day's Drift Competition, but the results remained the same. Kolu Lau walked away with the victory with Shige Hirabayashi in 2nd, and Royce Fujimoto in 3rd. With his 2nd place finish, Shige got the points he needed to bump Steve Oliberos out of top ranking. However, the points race remains close and Shige needs to maintain his recent winning streak to remain on top as Steve Oliberos, Keoni Rodrigues, and Barry Wong all remain within close reach of 1st place.

Overall, it was a great Drift Session and nice to meet a professional drifter in Hawaii. Ueo spent the rest of his stay sightseeing at the various tourist spots on Oahu, but soon it was time to return to Japan. Ueo hopes to return to Hawaii soon and work more with the Drift Session drivers to increase their skill. Best of luck to Ueo through the remainder of the 2005 D1 Grand Prix season.
