The 2004 Super Lap
Series for road racing kicked off this past weekend with a drivers
orientation and practice session at Hawaii Motorsports Center.
Beginner drivers were shown the basics of track safety and procedure
before being allowed to practice lapping on the short course. Also
making the event were several veteran drivers who were allowed to
run on the long course and do some wheel to wheel racing.
An interesting mix of
vehicles made it out to the track including some vintage hachi-rokus,
a FC RX7, a bunch of WRXs, some STi's, Porsches, an Integra sedan,
350Z, and S2000s. Various times were put up on the scorecards and
drivers were grouped according to their lap times for even placement
on the track. Fastest Lap of the day went to Scott Schulte driving
his Porsche to a 36 second lap time on the short course.
The day went by
smoothly as all drivers were rotated on and off of the track with
speedy efficiency. The lack of downtime at this event was greatly
appreciated by the drivers as they prepped their vehicles to receive
even more track time. One driver even had to run to the gas station
in Kapolei after running his car through so many laps!
Also making it out to
the track for interviews with event staff and drivers was Alison Kam
from OC16's Dis and Dat TV show, hosted by our friend Kutmaster Spaz.
Be on the lookout for Super Lap coverage on an upcoming episode of
Dis and Dat on OC16, Monday through Fridays at 6pm.
The Super Lap Series
continues with its first day of competition on April 17th, 2004 from
8:30am - 3pm. New drivers and veteran racers alike are encouraged to
show up for all levels of competition and track practice.
