Bright
and early, drivers and spectators made their way out to the rear
entrance of Hawaii Motorsports Center for the first event in the
2004 DS Super Lap Series. After having much success in the world of
Drifting, the Drift Session has now turned its attention to the
sport of road racing.
After
several years of sitting on the back burner, road racing returns to
Hawaii Motorsports center with an emphasis on track time and driver
development. Also a newcomer to the world of road racing in Hawaii
is the "Time Attack" competition which allows street
vehicles to compete against each other in timed competition in a
battle of driving skill and vehicle tuning supremacy.

A
full field of drivers set up their pit areas early in the morning,
bringing with them fuel, tires, an tool boxes. After setting up, the
drivers were ushered into the racing school classroom for a driver's
meeting and track orientation. After the meeting finished, the
drivers were quickly out to their vehicles and onto the track for
lapping practice.
Vehicles
were divided as best as possible according to lap times and
horsepower. The careful segregation of vehicles allowed for
uninterrupted lapping and smooth driving on the racetrack.

After
the morning practice sessions, there was a quick break for lunch and
then back to competition. For the Time Attack competition, drivers
were put into groups of 4 - 5 vehicles depending on their lap times.
Drivers were then given 5 laps on the track to clock a best time for
competition purposes. At the end of the day, it was Egmar Klemmer in
his Porsche with the fastest lap time of 39.9 seconds on the Short
Course.
Once
the Time Attack competition was completed, the Formula Fords took to
the track for long course wheel-to-wheel racing action. A field of 4
Formula Fords made it to the track for this event driven by veteran
drivers: Dave Goto, Richie Miao, Anders Nervell, and Steve Timpson.
The well balanced open-wheel racecar design and 1.6 L engines
allowed the Formula Fords to run the fastest lap times of the day at
57 seconds on the long course as compared to an average 42 seconds
on the short course by streetcars.

The
Formula Fords ran 2 intense back to back 10 lap races, with Steve
Timpson just edging out Dave Goto for the win in the first race and
Dave Goto clearly taking the second race.
All
in all, it was a great day for racing with the Drift Session. We
hope to see you all again for the second event in the Super Lap
Series on May 1st, 2004.
